Unknown Christian at recent press conference

Centuries ago, in the deserts of Egypt an early Christian mystic scratched a prayer in the sands of the Scetes Dessert. He prayed this powerful prayer but one time and walked away, trusting that the gentle desert breeze would wash the words from this abandoned wasteland. The name of this godly mystic has faded from history but a disciple who heard the prayer wrote it down on parchment. In every generation there are those who have prayed this prayer and then faded into obscurity.

The author of Beowulf prayed this prayer

Thomas Paine prayed this prayer before he penned Common Sense but later rescinded the prayer

The author of The Kneeling Christian prayed this prayer

Here is this ancient prayer

Prayer of Obscurity

“Lord, make my life obscure. May I be less well known tomorrow than I am today. May I come to the place where my most intimate of companions, out of ignorance, might address me simply as “Bro.”  In my quest for obscurity, as I travail the depths of anonymity, may I one day be known to Thee alone.”

The Unknown Christian

Embracing ObscurityWhen prayed, with sincerity, the prayer is still efficacious. The current best-selling book Embracing Obscurity: Becoming Nothing in Light of God’s Everything was written by Anonymous. Being anonymous is tougher these days because of social media and speaking gigs. But it’s not impossible. Anonymous is scheduled to speak at Catalyst, Exponential and Orange in 2014 but refused to have his name put in the program…in the name of obscurity.

The concept of anonymity is spreading like wild fire as people are building anonymous apps like Yik Yak, Secret, and Whisper, raising millions of dollars in funding…all in the name of anonymity, causing some to question the ethics of anonymous publishing and mobile apps.

I wish I could sign this post but after praying the Prayer of Obscurity I don’t even remember my own name.

Known but to God
