How tables builds community

Public CoffeeLast Saturday Liz, and four friends from work went to TEDx MileHigh. Of course it was a great event but the thing that got the lion’s share of my attention was something called Public Coffee.  Public Coffee defines itself as follows: “Public Coffee is a mobile coffee shop. It visits various neighborhoods throughout Denver to serve coffee and start good conversations. Public Coffee is a toolbox to be used and shared by everyone to build our community the way we wish to see it.”  They serve great coffee and on each cup is a printed conversation starter. And here’s the strangest thing–the coffee tables have no legs. Each coffee table is a round disc that requires at least two people to hold steady enough to place their cup of coffee on. In the middle of the table is a conversation topic. Each table can accomodate 5-6 people.

Now imagine if you donated all the tables in your foyer or fellowship hall to Evangelistic Tables for India, or some such worthy charity and replaced them with Public Coffee style tables. What would coffee time be like?
